BDR cold call script for qualification calls

Updated September 28, 20265 min read3 primary sources

An SDR standing at his desk mid-call, gesturing as he talks

The short answer

This BDR qualification script books the right accounts into the AE calendar and screens the wrong ones out in ninety seconds. The opener earns the next minute, four questions test fit and timing, six objection responses handle the standard brush-offs, and the close is a routed handoff with a confirmed slot. The AI summary carries the qualification facts the AE needs before the meeting.

The script

Sample talk track. Fictional names. Adapt it to your offer and your rules.
  1. Rep

Hi [name], this is [name] with [company]. We have not spoken before; I will be upfront, this is a cold call about how [category] is handled at [company]. Give me 30 seconds and tell me if it is worth more. Fair?

  2. Prospect

    Thirty seconds.

  3. Rep

We work with [ICP descriptor] teams that [pain outcome]. Usually by the time I call, the team is feeling [specific symptom]. Is that a conversation at [company], or are you past it?

  4. Prospect

We are feeling some of that, honestly.

  5. Rep

Then two quick questions so I do not waste your time. Who owns [problem area] today, you, or another team?

  6. Prospect

    I do, along with ops.

  7. Rep

And when something changes there, is that a this-quarter conversation or a next-year one?

  8. Prospect

Probably next quarter, we have a release until then.

  9. Rep

That is useful and honest. Here is what I would do: our solutions engineer runs a 25 minute technical review, not a pitch, and next quarter is exactly when you would want it booked, because the review output feeds your planning. I have Thursday at 2 or the 14th at 10. Which is less bad?

  10. Prospect

    The 14th might work.

  11. Rep

I will send the invite from my address with an agenda so you can forward it to whoever else should sit in. If the release slips, reschedule freely, no guilt. One last thing so we prepare properly: what should we absolutely not waste time on in that review?

  12. Prospect

We already migrated off [old platform], so skip that.

  13. Rep

Noted on the lead, that just saved you 15 minutes. Talk on the 14th, [name].

What qualification means on a cold call

A BDR qualification call has two good exits: a dated meeting the AE actually wants, or an honest disposition that keeps the board clean. Everything else is noise. This script gets to one of those exits in under four minutes by asking four questions that test fit and timing, and by refusing to pitch, because the pitch is the AE’s job and the pitch on a cold call is what turns a maybe into a no.

The 30-second permission opener is the engine. It trades honesty for a real window, and it performs better than fake familiarity because busy people punish tricks and reward candor. In production use across 3-line sessions over 90 days, median volume ran about 85 dials per active hour and roughly 600 per operator day with person connects around 17.8 percent; qualification work lives or dies on how each connect is spent, not on dial count.

The structure

The honest opener. Name, company, cold-call admission, category, 30-second ask. No fake referrals, no pretending the call was scheduled.

The symptom line. One sentence describing who you work with and the symptom that precedes a purchase. The prospect’s reaction, recognition or dismissal, is the first qualification signal.

Ownership question. Who owns the problem area today. Owner means timing conversation; non-owner means referral or nurture.

Timing question. This quarter or next. Honest next-quarters book meetings for the right week; dishonest nows produce no-shows.

The routed close. Two slots with the right resource attached, an agenda in the invite so it can be forwarded, and a preparation question that makes the prospect design their own meeting.

Objection handling

“We already have a tool for that”

“That is normal; nobody we work with started from zero. One question: if you could change one thing about it, what would it be?” The answer is qualification gold: a complaint means a future conversation, contentment means a nurture with a date. Log either way and move.

“Send me some information”

“I will, and to make it worth opening I will send the agenda for a 25 minute technical review instead of a brochure. If the agenda reads relevant, we hold the meeting; if not, tell me and I will stop.” Information without a date is where leads go to die; information attached to a meeting is the artifact of one.

“No budget this year”

“Budget conversations next cycle are won by whoever helped shape the requirements this cycle. The review costs nothing and feeds your planning doc. Want it on the calendar for the week budget discussions start?” Timing honesty converts no-budget into dated nurture better than any pitch.

“Call me next quarter”

Agree, then date it inside the call: “First week of [month]?” Set the task, confirm the trigger event that should start the quarter, and disposition as dated nurture. Undated next-quarters are how CRMs fill with ghosts.

“How did you get my number?”

Truthfully: a business contact list compiled or licensed for the segment, tied to the role and company size your team serves. Never invent a referral. If the prospect asks to never be called, honor it on the spot and log it; the same account may buy in two years and the memory of a straight answer is the reason they take that call.

“We are in the middle of a release”

“Then I will be brief and useful: the review is 25 minutes, reschedulable without guilt, and booking it now for the week the release ships means the output lands when planning starts. The 14th at 10 or the week after?” Releases end; calendars filled during them are the ones that hold.

Gatekeeper line

Keep it one sentence and role-honest: “Hi, this is [name] with [company]. Who owns [problem area] for the team?” If asked what it is about: “A 30 second question about how [category] is handled; I think she will want the two minutes.” Get the name and title, thank them, and use both on the next attempt. Gatekeepers who hand you a name once will hand it again if you were pleasant; gatekeepers you trick once will bury you forever.

Voicemail, 18 seconds

“[Name], this is [name] at [company]. Cold call, no trick: I had a specific question about how [company] handles [problem area]. I will try Thursday morning, or my direct line is [number].” Specific, short, no buzzwords. Log every voicemail so attempt cadence rotates dayparts instead of stacking them.

After the call

The AI summary should carry the qualification facts: ownership, timing, current tooling, the skip-this note, and the routed slot. The BDR edits wrong fields and sets the handoff task before the next connect. Dispositions match the trade: qualified and routed, nurture dated, unqualified, callback requested, no-show recycled, bad number, left voicemail, do not call. The no-show recycle exists because calendars slip; the recycle call re-books with the same agenda, zero guilt, within five business days.

Compliance in one paragraph

Calls between a telemarketer and a business to induce a business purchase are mostly outside the FTC Telemarketing Sales Rule under the narrow exemption in 16 CFR 310.6(b)(7), but the exemption is narrow and is not a TCPA exemption: 47 CFR 64.1200 rules on autodialed and prerecorded calls to wireless numbers still apply, and B2B lists contain personal cells. Inbound leads who ask not to be called again are honored and logged immediately. Several states require all parties to consent to recording; use a disclosure. DialBreeze applies your internal DNC list, quiet hours and attempt caps; list provenance and consent records are yours. This guide describes rules, not legal advice.

FAQ

What is the BDR's job on this call?
Two outcomes only: a routed, dated meeting for the AE with the qualification facts attached, or an honest disqualification logged so nobody re-works it next month. Everything in the script serves one of those two exits.
Why ask who owns the problem before pitching?
Ownership is the qualification axis most calls skip. If the prospect owns it, timing is the only obstacle and a dated meeting works. If another team owns it, the right outcome is a referral or a nurture, not a meeting the AE will sit alone in.
How do you handle the send me an email brush-off?
Agree immediately and attach the date: the agenda goes out today, and if the agenda reads relevant, the meeting holds. Email as a replacement for the meeting dies; email as the artifact of a booked meeting compounds.
Are B2B cold calls legal?
Mostly yes with limits: calls between a telemarketer and a business to induce a business purchase sit outside the FTC Telemarketing Sales Rule under the narrow exemption in 16 CFR 310.6(b)(7), but that is not a TCPA exemption, and 47 CFR 64.1200 restrictions on autodialed and prerecorded calls to wireless numbers still apply because B2B lists contain personal cells.
What should the BDR never do on a qualification call?
Fake urgency, invent a referral, or book a meeting they know the AE would kill. A disqualified account logged honestly is worth more than a padded calendar; the pipeline metric that matters is revenue per hundred dials, not meetings per hundred dials.
